BJP ups the ante, dubs Mamata Banerjee ‘queen of corruption’
KOLKATA: Taking cue from party president Amit Shah, BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abas Naqvi on Monday launched into a scathing attack on chief minister Mamata Banerjee, saying the "daughter of revolution has become queen of corruption" and that Saradha will be Trinamool Congress's Waterloo.
Apprehending a re-run of the 2014 Lok Sabha election in Bengal that was marred by allegations of booth capturing, rigging, anarchy and hooliganism, Naqvi met state chief electoral officer Sunil Gupta and demanded that the "biased local police" shouldn't be placed within 100 metres of polling stations during the September 13 bypolls to Chowringhee and Bashirhat Dakshin.
Speaking to reporters later at BJP's Murlidhar Sen Lane state office, Naqvi said: "We are cautious, given our experience in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in Bengal. Here, the law and order machinery was completely hijacked by anti-socials under the patronage of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Therefore, we have demanded to the CEO that all polling booths should be manned by central forces and the voting process videographed. Paramilitary forces should be deployed both inside and outside and local police should have no role to play in the polling stations."
Naqvi reminded the CEO that North 24-Parganas district magistrate Sanjay Bansal had been removed by EC in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, and demanded that he be removed again and action taken. "We have definite information that he is acting like a Trinamool worker," Naqvi alleged.
He believes Bengal is in the "cusp of change". "Trinamool is now being dominated by corrupt forces. Corruption and crime are rampant in its ranks. Party faithfuls are demoralised. So are the people of Bengal. There are visible indications for change. The daughter of revolution has become the queen of corruption within three years. Saradha will be the Waterloo for Trinamool," Naqvi said.
Continuing his scathing attack on Mamata, he said: "Trinamool came to power riding on hope after 34 years of anarchy and poor governance. But she has now 100% relief to loot. It appears all the anti-social elements in the Left are now on deputation to Trinamool. BJP is a visible alternative — a strong alternative." He alleged that Mamata's concern isn't for the locals here, but for Bangladeshi infiltrators. "We have asked EC to give special emphasis on illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators, who enjoy Trinamool patronage and vote for it," added Naqvi.
Responding to Naqvi, Trinamool secretary-general Partha Chatterjee said, "BJP is sure of defeat, which is why it is sending leaders from Delhi. Before the last Lok Sabha polls BJP spent crores through advertisements to get votes. But in Bengal, Trinamool, under Mamata Banerjee, secured 34 seats that is a record since Independence. The people of Bengal will again snub BJP."
