Crucial evidence in Burdwan blast 'destroyed'

NEW DELHI: The Indian security establishment believes that the group involved in the October 2 accidental blast in Burdwan district of West Bengal was preparing explosives for terror attacks in Bangladesh, but the local police seems to have destroyed a significant part of the evidence recovered from the suspects.

Shakil Ahmed and Shobhan Mondal were killed while a third suspect, Abdul Hasan, was injured in the explosion. A senior official said Ahmed was a Bangladeshi citizen linked to Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). They were preparing IEDs when the explosives went off.

Ahmed's wife Rejara Biwi and Amina Biwi, wife of Abdul Hasan, have confessed to interrogators about their role in sending explosives to Bangladesh for terror attacks.

After visiting the spot, investigators from the National Investigation Agency and Intelligence Bureau confirmed the suspicion about the Bangladesh link. Some literature on al Qaeda and Indian Mujahideen were recovered from the building in which the blast happened.

Sources said the local police had destroyed most of the explosives recovered from the spot. This made the task of the investigators more difficult.

Reports said the government has alerted Dhaka about the conspiracy.

Police have recovered detonators, watch dials and SIM cards from the house in Khagragarh locality in Burdwan. The literature recovered from the house contained references to Indian Mujahideen, al Qaeda and Chechen rebels.

Even as credible Bangladesh links emerge, sources said they are not going to fully rule out any other links of the suspects.

The blast comes within days of al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri announcing the setting up of a South Asia branch of his terror outfit. More importantly, there have been indications emerging of some kind of links for global terror, especially the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), in West Bengal-Bangladesh border.

A month ago, when the Hyderabad police foiled attempt by four youths to join ISIS, they were traced to Kolkata. The youths were to flee to Iraq from there.
