'TMC' men attack Bolpur police station
BOLPUR: Bolpur Police bore the brunt of Trinamool rage hours before director general of police GMP Reddy appeared before the Calcutta high court on Thursday to submit that the party district president Anubrata Mandal had no role in the Parui murder.
Trinamool workers led by Birbhum Youth Trinamool Congress president Sudipta Ghosh allegedly went on a rampage at the Bolpur police station at around 12.30 am on Thursday and allegedly roughed up Shamim Khan, the officer on duty. The violence inside the police station prompted cops to slap charges of criminal intimidation against the miscreants based on the FIR lodged by none other than the victim police officer. The incident has cast a shadow on the role of the Birbhum police who are dealing with the Parui murder charge sheet.
Shamim in his FIR has named Sudipta Ghosh and ten others. The police officer alleged that at around 12.30 am on Thursday Ghosh accompanied by a group of people from Dharmarajtala locality came to the police station following a dispute in their locality. During conversation Ghosh allegedly abused, threatened the officer on duty and assaulted him.
Police slapped a host of charges on Ghosh such as preventing a public servant from doing his duty, causing grievous hurt to a public servant while on duty and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code. "A group of people raided the police station and misbehaved with the duty officer. The duty officer has lodged the complaint," said Bolpur SDPO Suryaprasad Yadav.
The district Trinamool Youth Congress president had his own argument. "There was a serious breach of law and order in Dharmatrajtala locality. A woman took out fire arms and threatened locals over a spat. The local people came to our party office and asked us to accompany them to police. I went to the police station with them. When we were talking to officers inside the police station some angry people waiting outside might have created some chaos. But I didn't threaten or abuse the officer. Probably for this my name has been figured. My party leaders have been informed about this incident," said Sudipta Ghosh over phone.
Trinamool Birbhum general secretary Bikash Roychowdhury said he was not aware of the details. "I need to know the details of what had happened," said Roychowdhury. Siddhi Nath Gupta, IGP, Western Zone and Tripurari, DIG, Burdwan Range who reached Bolpur on Thursday in connection with the Visva-Bharati molestation complaint were briefed about the alleged attack on police.
