যাদবপুরকাণ্ডে পুলিশ সংবেদনশীলতার সঙ্গে, ধৈর্য্য ধরে কাজ করেছে। সাংবাদিক বৈঠক করে আজ এমনই দাবি করেছেন পুলিশ কমিশনার সুরজিত কর পুরকায়স্থ। তাঁর দাবি, পুলিশ যা করেছে, আইন মেনেই করেছে।

পুলিশ কমিশনারের দাবি, বহিরাগতদের কাছে মারাত্মক অস্ত্র ছিল, এমনই খবর ছিল পুলিশের কাছে। তিনি আরও বলেন তাও অনেক সংবেদনশীলতা ও ধৈর্য্যে সঙ্গে ছাত্রছাত্রীদের সামলানোর চেষ্টা করে পুলিশ। তাদের উপর কোনও লাঠিচার্জ করা হয়নি, কারণ কোনও পুলিশকর্মীর হাতে লাঠি ছিল না।

পুলিশ কমিশনার আরও দাবি করেন, যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য লিখিতভাবে পুলিশের কাছে জানিয়ে ছিলেন ছাত্রদের আন্দোলনের জেরে তাঁর প্রাণ সংশয়ের সম্ভাবনা আছে, তারপরই ক্যাম্পাসে যায় পুলিশ।

এদিকে আজও মঙ্গলবার মধ্যরাতের ঘটনার প্রতিবাদ-আন্দোলনে উত্তাল হয়ে ওঠে যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় চত্বর। উপাচার্যের পদত্যাগ ও পুলিশ অফিসারদের শাস্তির দাবিতে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ২ নম্বর গেটের সামনে বিক্ষোভে সামিল হয় বিজেপির মহিলা মোর্চা। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চার নম্বর গেটের সামনে বিক্ষোভ দেখায় ডিএসও। এদিকে, আক্রান্ত পড়ুয়াদের দেখতে কেপিসি মেডিক্যাল কলেজে যান সিপিআই নেতা শ্রীকুমার মুখোপাধ্যায়ের নেতৃত্বে এক প্রতিনিধি দল, তিনিও উপাচার্যের পদত্যাগের দাবিতে সরব হন।

মঙ্গলবার রাতে ছাত্রদের অবস্থান বিক্ষোভে মধ্যরাতে আলো নিভিয়ে নির্বিচারে লাঠিচার্জ করে পুলিশ। মেয়েদের ওপর নির্মমভাবে লাথি, ঘুসিও মারা হয় বলে অভিযোগ। সেই ঘটনায় উপাচার্যের পদত্যাগের দাবিতে বিভিন্ন মহল ক্রমশ সুর চড়াচ্ছে।

KOLKATA: A Jadavpur University third-year student, who joined the agitation because she knows the earlier molestation victim and was shocked by her "character assassination" by the internal probe committee, did not have an inkling of the horror that was to follow. She, too, was molested. Shaken, she asks: "If this is the face of the law enforcer, can law really prevail in such a land?" Here is her account:

Around 1pm, we heard that police were assembling near gate 1. I was surprised. Some cops had approached us earlier and asked us to move, but we told them that our peaceful demonstration would continue. There was enough scope for further negotiations and JUTA (Jadavpur University Teachers' Association) was trying to mediate.

By the next half hour, there were several of them right in front Aurobindo Bhavan. The next thing I knew was I being groped, shoved, hit and pulled by a mass of brawny men — some in uniform, others in plainclothes. Two female cops stood to one side, watching in silence. Suddenly, the area plunged into darkness, the only lights coming from TV cameras recording the brutality. I found one of my female friends being dragged towards a police van outside. When I tried to help her, two men lunged at me and dragged me by my hair. Two other men began pulling at my T-shirt, trying to force me towards the van.

When they bundled us in, there was no woman cop inside the van. We were left at the mercy of five cops and two homeguards. I tried to argue that women cannot be arrested after sundown, but police paid no heed and instead took us to the Lalbazar central lock-up. I said I wanted to lodge a molestation FIR against the accused officers. Even as I kept repeating my rights, police shoved me into another van, saying that I had to be taken for a mandatory medical test. Thankfully, this time there were a couple of women cops.

They took me all the way back to Bangur Hospital. The 'medical test' was a mere blood pressure test after which they forced me to sign on some documents against my wishes. After the test got over — and to my utter surprise — they took me to Jadavpur police station. I asked some extremely rude cops why I was brought there but they told me to keep shut. After some time, a senior officer gave a rather surprising explanation. He said "it was safer" for me to stay in the police station than the campus. I again said I wanted to lodge a molestation case against the cops, but no one paid any heed.

They let me off early morning. Till now, I have no clue whether I was arrested or merely detained. I am worried about the signatures I put in. Please do not put in my name as my family will get nervous. But tell me, if the government commits such atrocities, can the youth just sit and watch?"

JU brand name under threat

Campus violence is something that Jadavpur University has learnt to live with now. In fact, we have earned enough acclaim for this in all our years of student unrest, something that has become a brand of its own and comparable with what happens in institutions like Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

This institution has still managed to keep its academic fame intact, but there is a far bigger problem that is not getting highlighted, something that will eventually affect the brand name of the institution, to use a corporate jargon.

A number of new rules are being ushered in under the aegis of the vice-chancellor, which will have a long term negative impact on the research activities of the university. It was after years of painstaking effort by the teaching community here that 21 interdisciplinary schools were formed but the VC has formulated a system whereby these schools are functioning without directors and are gradually getting into the doldrums.

The faculty dean is supposed to oversee everything. This is humanly impossible. I fear that this is a calculated move to destroy the institution.

It is the violence on campus that easily attracts the attention of the media but such non-violent long term damage will ultimately affect the very basis on which the university has made its name.

As for the violence on Tuesday night I must say that the campus has become divided into two enemy camps, one led by the VC and the other, by the students. How can the VC decide to call the police as the go-between instead of communicating with the students himself? Why did he not rely on the registrar or the teachers? The students had been holding a demonstration for some days and did not gherao the VC. How could he say that there was a threat to his life?

I accept that the atmosphere at JU has always been very volatile where dialogues between students and the management have mostly turned disruptive but for the VC to say that students were planning to eliminate him, is rather far-fetched. For a VC to bring charges of murder conspiracy and rioting with weapons against his students can land them in serious trouble. A VC filing an FIR against his students is a matter of grave significance. I have seen TV footage of what happened on campus and I am sure that students were definitely not trying to murder their VC.

During the Left regime, I worked on this campus and worked quite freely, I must say this despite the fact that I was not a Left supporter. But today there is a shift. Academics is being remote controlled now.

যাদবপুর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পুলিশি তাণ্ডব নিয়ে সর্বত্র সমালোচনার ঝড় ওঠার পর বৃহস্পতিবার নয়াতত্ত্ব খাড়া করার চেষ্টা করলেন পুলিশ কমিশনার। এদিন দাবি করলেন, আমাদের কাছে খবর ছিল, বহিরাগতদের কাছে মারাত্মক অস্ত্র রয়েছে। কিন্তু, তত্ত্ব তো খাড়া করলেন, তা প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে পারলেন কোথায়?

পুলিশ কমিশনার আবার স্যাক্সোফোন, গিটারকে অস্ত্র ভেবে ভুল করেননি তো! কটাক্ষের সুর পড়ুয়াদের গলায়।

প্রাক্তন পুলিশ-কর্তাদের একাংশ বলছেন, পুলিশ কমিশনার এদিন যেভাবে অস্ত্র-তত্ত্ব সামনে এনেছেন, তা অত্যন্ত পরিচিত পন্থা। পুলিশের মৃগয়াভূমি। অভিযুক্তদের বিরুদ্ধে যখন তথ্য প্রমাণ জোগাড় করতে পারেনা পুলিশ, তখন অনেকসময়ই ফাঁসানোর জন্য অভিযুক্তদের কাছ থেকে অস্ত্র কিংবা মাদক উদ্ধার হয়েছে বলে দেখায়। পুলিশের বিরুদ্ধে এরকম অভিযোগ মাঝেমধ্যেই ওঠে। অন্যদিকে, ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের কথা পছন্দ না হলে অনেকসময় তাঁদের গায়ে মাওবাদী তকমা লাগানোর অভিযোগও ওঠে শাসকের বিরুদ্ধে।

যাদবপুরকাণ্ডের পর নানা মহলে প্রশ্ন উঠছে, পুলিশকে আড়াল করতে কি কমিশনার অস্ত্র তত্বের সহজ এবং চেনা পথটাই বেছে নিলেন?
