Kolkata: State Bank of India (SBI) account holders will have a harrowing time from Sunday as the bank will remain closed for the next five days for public holidays and strikes called by its officers.
While Monday and Thursday are public holidays, the bank will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday for strikes called by All India State Bank Officers’ Federation. Around 15,000 branches (SBI and associate banks) across the country will be affected with 80,000 SBI officers going on strike.
“We have a charter of demands for which we are going on strike,” Kalyanbrata Bhowmik, general secretary, SBI Officers’ Association, Bengal Circle told TOI.
Besides the demand to be consulted in decisions, the association is also demanding withdrawal of suletters from the management to employees about to retire, stating that they will not be provided retirement benefits for some mistake they have committed in the past. Bhowmik also said that there were disciplinary issues like sudden demotion of staff for “committing mistakes.”
“There are many decisions by the management that go against customers’ interest also. We are protesting against them as well,” he said.
